Having done so in 2013, 2015 and 2017, St Giles Orchestra is partnering again with the Abingdon Music Festival, for "Maestro 2019" - a conducting masterclass led by internationally recognised expert Peter Stark. Maestro is based on the BBC programmes of the same name to which Peter was series consultant. SGO's Conductors, Geoffrey Bushell and Dwight Pile-Gray will observe all the masterclasses and with representatives of the orchestra assist Peter in selecting the winner. The winner was Israel Lai - he wins the opportunity to conduct a piece in St Giles Orchestra's January 2020 public concert. Open to the public all day. |

SGO's Conductor and Musical Director, Geoffrey Bushell, observed all the masterclasses and with representatives of the orchestra assisted Peter in selecting the winners. The winner was Dexter Drown, who wins the opportunity to conduct a piece in St Giles Orchestra's January 2018 public concert. An addition prize was awarded to Kentaro Machida, who wins a two-hour rehearsal conducting SGO. |

Having done so in 2013, St Giles Orchestra was invited to partner with the Abingdon Music Festival, for "Maestro 2015" - a conducting competition led by internationally recognised expert Peter Stark. Maestro is based on the BBC programmes of the same name to which Peter was series consultant. For Maestro 2009 and 2011 the participating musicians were aged between 15-22 years, and Maestro 2013 focused on a conducting masterclass for musicians aged 25 years and over. This year, eight aspiring conductors between the ages of 15 and 21 took part. SGO's Conductor and Musical Director, Geoffrey Bushell, observed all the masterclasses and with representatives of the orchestra assisted Peter in selecting the winners.
See video of the final concert. The First Prize winner was James Anderson-Besant, who won the opportunity to conduct Verdi's Force of Destiny Overture in a public concert with SGO in April 2016. The selection panel was unanimous that another candidate was worthy recipient of a prize, and Geoffrey immediately offered an additional First Prize, with the result that James Hargreaves won the opportunity to conduct the Irmelin Prelude by Delius at the same April 2016 concert. The Second Prize winner was Elizabeth Nurse, who won a two-hour rehearsal conducting SGO. |

Rebecca completed her Masters at the Royal Academy, and prior to that studied at Chetham's School of Music, Corpus Christi College Cambridge, and the prestigious Eastman Eastman School of Music in the USA. Rebecca has already won numerous prizes and awards, and was selected as the principal cellist of the 2012 London Sinfonietta Academy. Rebecca has recently been playing with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the London Sinfonietta, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia. Also in our concert we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius with his ever-popular and patriotic Finlandia. |

St Giles Orchestra was proud to partner with the Abingdon Music Festival, for "Maestro 2013" - a conducting competition led by internationally recognised expert Peter Stark. Maestro is based on the BBC programmes of the same name to which Peter was series consultant. For Maestro 2009 and 2011 the participating musicians were aged between 15-22 years. Maestro 2013 focused on a conducting masterclass for musicians aged 25 years and over. Many of the conductors had no previous conducting experience. Maestro is open to the public and anyone is welcome to come and watch all or any part of the day. Past audiences have thoroughly enjoyed watching the conductors develop as a result of Peter's inspiring coaching. SGO's Conductor and Musical Director, Geoffrey Bushell, observed all the masterclasses and assisted Peter in selecting a winner - Chris Nurse - who has won the opportunity to conduct Wagner's Flying Dutchman Overture with SGO in January 2014. The runner-up - Gabs Damiani - has won a rehearsal with SGO. |
