How we choose programmes

The shortlist of works is first made from suggestions canvassed from the players, taking into account the level of technical challenge
We then add pieces suggested by our audiences, which we glean either at concerts, or via the repertoire suggestions page on this website
We add pieces which our soloists want to play, and also add those pieces or programmes suggested by our partners (eg choral pieces)
We then theme and time each programme to make sure it fits together in an interesting way, and uses additional hired orchestral resources in a sensible way
We always include popular classics, referencing our selection against the - listeners' top 300 most popular pieces
We also make a point of including tuneful works by unjustly neglected composers, as both players and audiences say that they enjoy this aspect of our programming
Next we check the availability and cost of the orchestral scores, and of any soloists, and of resources available from sponsors. When the works listed on our next concerts page change, it is often because the music turns out to be impossibly expensive to hire
Finally, we publish our proposed programmes on this website, so players and audience can look forward to our future concerts.
